Sponsored by NY art dealer Brenda Taylor;

“Inherent in the local is the concept of place – a portion of land/town/cityscape seen from the inside, the resonance of a specific location that is known and familiar. Most often placed applies to our own “local” – entwined with personal memory, known and unknown histories, marks made in the land that provoke and evoke.”
Lucy Lippard, The Lure of the Local

We are providing you with the place of Machiasport, ME for one week, to explore a landscape rich with wildlife and where the earth meets the ocean. How might the terrain effect your work? How might your interaction with other students change your perspectives? How do you elicit your own voice when expressing your response to each? How do you organize these experiences visually?

This week will provide time to explore this landscape, working directly in it, with it, through it. My role as instructor is to begin a dialogue of experiential learning – teaching you how to set up personal parameters to allow you to be more deeply in the moment – whether that is experiencing the physical terrain, journaling or making a painting, sculpture, drawing or installation. I will encourage you to make personal knowledge connections to this environment, through activities like hiking, bird watching and becoming keen observers by using all of your senses. How you collect these experiences will be personal; journaling, story telling, photos, postcards, or physical collections of materials. The products we make will be based on these experiences and those you bring with you.

The Schedule;
Arrive Sunday, July 13 – after 4pm
Depart Saturday, July 19 by noon

The bonus to this intensive week, will be your interactions with NY art dealer Brenda Taylor. She is not only our host, but will be providing professional direction for you in approaching the art world.
